Alpha-1 Foundation The Alpha-1 Foundation provides leadership and resources for increased research, worldwide detection, improved treatment alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD).

Support Highlights

• The Alpha-1 Foundation Research Grant sponsored by Baxter will endow a pioneer study to screen African-Americans for possible genetic causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including AATD, a rare genetic disorder affecting the lungs, which often goes undiagnosed.
• The Foundation's Public Policy Program monitors and influences legislative and regulatory issues and makes public the Foundation’s positions on such issues as research, screening and detection, access to care, medical privacy, genetic non-discrimination, federal and state funding, blood product safety, education, and awareness. Baxter collaborates with the Foundation on public policy.
• Team Alpha-1 generates a substantial amount of publicity in smaller markets that, in turn, create opportunities to discuss the importance of testing and early diagnosis. Baxter is a proud sponsor of this program.
• Scientific conferences, meetings, and forums organized by the Foundation focus on specialized topics to advance knowledge of Alpha-1 and to address critical issues in the areas of improving treatments, education, detection and ethical issues. These meetings serve as forums for investigators to share data about their work and progress on Alpha-1 research.

Alpha-1 Association The Alpha-1 Association is a nonprofit organization that aims to increase the awareness and diagnosis of patients with AATD. The association provides education and support, and encourages research and advocacy activities for patients affected by this disorder.

Support Highlights

• Alpha-1 Association Genetic Counseling Center
• Education for patients and families in the areas of raising awareness of AATD, advocacy, as well as the need for early detection and intervention with appropriate therapies.
• The Alpha-1 Education Series provides access to current medical information and resources for Alphas, their families, and caregivers and are held in a variety of regions in the US each year to be accessible to all Alphas.
